There’s a lot of misleading crap out there on toll free websites

fiber optic toll free service

This is a question I received recently which I thought was worth publishing not because I get it that often but because it illustrates the point about a lot of misleading crap (sorry there’s just no other way to describe this) that you can find, even on websites that look very authentic and nice. Unfortunately it often takes a little bit of knowledge of the industry to recognize this type of thing for the marketing BS that it is.

What type of service do you offer? Is it fiberoptic?

It sounds like you’ve been reading marketing BS on tollfreenumber.org. There’s absolutely no such thing as a “fiber optic” toll free number or fiber optic toll free service. If you search for that term in quotes on google, you’ll find almost no hits because tollfreenumber.org simply made it up to make them sound good but it means nothing. Tollfreenumber.org tends to have a LOT of half truths on their website.

More things in common between smsgov and tollfreenumber.org

This is a follow up post to a post I wrote earlier with six reasons why I believe tollfreenumber.org is behind the mysterious fake sms website, smsgov.com. There are small things from time to time that both smsgov.com and tollfreenumber.org have in common which shows that smsgov.com is actually controlled by tollfreenumber.org. Each of these things by themselves may not prove that they’re connected. But all of these things together are clearly more than a coincidence.

The latest thing I noticed is the claim that “an estimated 8,000 numbers get registered every day”. It says estimated so it it’s obviously not a specific statistic. But it doesn’t say who estimated it. But when I search for that phrase even without quotes with the word “toll free” in quotes to limit the search to pages that at least mention toll free numbers, you’ll find there are only two sites that ever mention this statistic and of course they are tollfreenumber.org and the Fake sms site, smsgov.com. This is kind of on the level of what I wrote about when both websites stopped being updated for a while at the same time.

So Marshall Logan can hide behind anonymity if he wants to, and make up statistics, but he’s not fooling people. And if this wasn’t true he would have said something about it. Marshall, you should really be ashamed of yourself trying to deceive people like this. That really isn’t necessary to sell toll free service. Well unless you just have an affiliate program that you’re trying to pass off as a phone company!

      Tollfreenumber.org is very misleading

Why does tollfreenumber.org continue to “mislead” peole about how long they’ve been in the toll free business? Do they think if they keep repeating it often enough that it’ll somehow be true? They wrote again that they’ve been serving the toll free community for a decade. That is only true if you count having a single link buried on their website for toll free service as serving the toll free community. That was the extent of their toll free service from 1999 to 2002. They didn’t provide the toll free service. They just sent customers to another company that provided the service.

I guess that’s really no different than they do now though if you think about it. None of those customers they refer to in that article get a bill from tollfreenumber.org. They talk about 24 hour customer service, but they don’t provide the customer service at all. They are just sending the customers to other companies! We could pretend to be the phone company if we wanted to, but I think it’s just more honest to give the customer more choices and proof of ownership. They don’t give you proof of ownership, and don’t even talk about proof of ownership because they make you stay or want you to stay with the phone company they send you to. And they don’t want you to have any choice because they want the commissions from selling you that service.

So they pretend to have been in the toll free business for a decade (when they haven’t) by cleverly wording it to SOUND like they were in the toll free business which they weren’t. And they cleverly word it to SOUND like they are the carrier providing the service and billing the customer for the service. But they’re not. If this isn’t true they can sue me and make me change this. But this isn’t my opinion, it’s the facts and truth.

      tollfreenumber.ORG is very misleading

Experience Counts With Toll Free Providers.

This was the headline of a post on the tollfreenumber.org in their blog today. The funny part is how they’re misleading people about their experience and what they actually do. See how TollFreeNumber.org has inflated (and lied) about their own toll free experience.

They say on the top of their home page that they’ve been helping customers with toll free numbers since 1999. What they don’t tell you is that they weren’t in the toll free number business in 1999 at all. They just had one link buried on the web hosting business for toll free numbers. If they think that experience counts for anything they’re only kidding themselves. Misleading customers about their experience says way more about them than anything else.

counting a link to someone that sells toll free service as your 'experience' is clearly dishonest and misleading!

Why does Tollfreenumber.ORG have to mislead people?

          who is TollFreeNumber.ORG really?

Thank you for an excellent website. I’ve spent the week trying to visit every page and educate myself about toll-free. I wish I found you several years ago. I ordered my toll-free number through tollfreenumber.ORG (for some reason, they insist on capitalizing those last three letters!).

My experience with tollfreenumber.ORG has been that all they do is sell you the initial number. Opex Long Distance does my billing and handles all billing related questions. Should I leave well enough alone and just keep going with Opex, or should I try to remove my toll-free numbers from tollfreenumber.ORG and then re-establish them with Opex (or someone else you recommended) independently? Does tollfreenumber.ORG “own” your number or are you free to transfer it to another provider? I can’t find anything on their website and they haven’t returned my call. I have no problem with Opex’s service now. Just wondering.

          Roger C. (sent via email)

          They’re not an ORGanization

Yes, they do capitalize the .ORG (even on their smsgov.com site). And ironically it’s really not an organization at all. They’re essentially an affiliate

          They’re not a Resporg

They’re not a resporg so they don’t actually have access into the sms database. They have to send your requests for vanity numbers to other phone companies. That’s why they can’t do searches live on their website and that’s also why take a couple days to activate a number for you, because they’re not really activating your number, they’re asking another phone company to do it.

They’re not a phone company or even a reseller.

They claim to be a world class provider of toll free service but they don’t provide any of it. They don’t even provide temporary service like we do before the number is transferred to the carrier. They just send the order to the company they sell. They’re just selling the service of a couple companies.

If they were providing the customer service and doing the billing they could at least be considered a Reseller. So what exactly do they do? They simply hide the actual provider and take your order and send it to another company. That doesn’t mean that the companies they sell are bad, but they’re still just selling you someone else’s phone service. Unfortunately though, you don’t get any choice with them and even worse, you don’t even know who you’re buying from.

They charge 80% more than we do for less

They charge $89 to get a vanity number versus our $49. There’s not too much more that needs to be added to that except to point out that they can’t get you numbers in Disconnect, or Premium numbers at all. You don’t get any free temporary service and it takes several days to activate.

If you’re already used tollfreenumber.org you don’t need to do anything because you’re not using them any more. They are still getting commissions on you but you’re not using them, you’re using the company they that sent your order to. Fortunately they can’t keep you from transferring away even if they wanted to, since they’re not the responsible organization or the phone company.

They’re not going to give you independent proof of ownership or talk about your ability to transfer the number because they don’t want you to transfer it. So you wind up with the same problem with them that you would with any other phone company, relying on the people who want to keep you there for your ability to transfer away. (I call that the Kids Guarding the Cookie Jar paradox.)

So in conclusion, if you buy something from an affiliate, that doesn’t make what you bought wrong. It’s just sad that this affiliate has to mislead people and pretend that they’re somehow more than they really are.

Question: What costs more, takes longer, gets you less help and fewer options?

The answer: a toll free number from tollfreenumber.org.

I got a question from one of the phone companies I work with about a customer trying to transfer their number to them. They wanted us to send our Toll Free Birth Certificate™ but I couldn’t find one for that number or any reference to that customer. It turns out they got a toll free number from tollfreenumber.org not TollFreeNumbers.com. It’s understandable that someone could confuse the two, especially since they sound so similar. But when you look beneath the hype and compare them there are a lot of differences.

            More Help

We provide much better look up tools, and more information and resources to help customers find the best possible number for their business. I would also include that you can reach real people that know what they’re doing and want to help you much more easily than tollfreenumber.org or any other regular phone company.

            Premium Numbers, and Disconnected Numbers

We have access to thousands of premium and disconnected numbers that no other phone company will help you get. No other phone company can help you find these numbers let alone get any of them.

            Faster Activation

Our activations are working within minutes or a couple hours, not the couple days you get from other phone companies.

            Independent proof of ownership

No other phone company provides proof of ownership for one simple reason. Your ability to transfer your number is much more important than most people realize in the beginning but it’s basically what keeps them honest.

Ability to select any phone company

Nobody else gives you that because they want you to stay with them forever. Many you find on the internet actually force you to stay with them but claiming the number is THEIR and not yours. They want you to stay with them forever. Some force you to stay and some just want you to stay but either way, they have no incentive to empower you to select another phone company.

            Talk to real people

If you’ve ever tried to reach a live person at your regular phone company you know what we’re talking about. We’re available via email or on the phone almost all the time. You’ll get the same person you talked to last time, who knows what they’re doing and English isn’t their second language.

            Faster releases

We release things within hours and send you email notification when it’s released. Nobody else does either of those things. Other phone companies have an incentive to make the transfer process difficult and confusing and take several days at best.

            All for less money!

We do all of this for less money than anyone else.
Follfreenumber.org for example charges $89 for a standard vanity number activation which we have always charged $49 for.

14 years of honest experience – TollFreeNumbers.com was started in 1995. This has been our only business for 14 years. Tollfreenumber.org claims to have been in business since 1999 but that’s only because the owner had an internet service provider and had one page buried in his site that mentioned one or two lines about toll free numbers back in 1999. They didn’t get into the toll free business for several years after that but they think it’s more important to try and make themselves sound better and more reputable than it is to be honest about it.

Tollfreenumber.org tries in several ways to make it sound like they’re a large established company and actually providing the toll free service. They claim repeatedly to be a “world class service provider” because they know that if you realized they were just marketing the services of other companies like an affiliate site, you’d never use them.

Honestly we don’t just beat them in some aspects, we eat their lunch in every direction if you really look at it. They cost more, and give you less help finding a number, really no choice or independence, no free temporary service and they take longer activating and releasing them. Hopefully their slick marketing tactics can make up for everything else.

              Ugly Spam from TollFreeNumber.ORG

This is an example of how NOT to build links. Don’t pay a firm you’ve never heard of or people in India who have never heard of toll free numbers to write articles about your company. You’ll wind up with this type of crap that isn’t going to help you with search engines and ultimately makes you look bad. Google probably doesn’t need anyone to report a page like this, as it’s got several signs of crap written all over it.

You would think that a company like TollFreeNumber.ORG who’s already doing reasonably well in the search engines and knows internet marketing would be smarter than doing something like this which can get his website penalized, especially when you add this to the other stuff we’ve documented them doing. (The highlighting of the company name below was added) Just click on the image to see the original image more clearly and read the article, if you can.

              spam from Logan Marshall

Tollfreenumber.org is letting SMSGOV withering away

Since we pointed out why we believed that smsgov.COM was set up and run by TollFreeNumber.org, they have almost given up on maintaining the site. With just 2 posts since the 1st of the year, when they used to do daily posts, they seem to have given up on their scam.

Interestingly enough the tollfreenumber.org blog phonebillhelp.org also switched entirely to lazy reposts, or writing about two sentences and then linking to a six month old post in their archive. They haven’t written a single real post since December 31st, that I could find. The last 50 or so posts are ALL just teasers from six month old posts.

My guess is that they were either both developed by the same internet marketing service who has moved on, or that something happened to personally distract Logan Marshall the owner of tollfreenumber.org. They have been doing different marketing tactics such as their recent Spam Links by SubmitEdge, so I’m guessing they just changed marketing companies.

                  TollFreeNumber.org buying spam links

You’ve probably heard that Google doesn’t like paid links and penalizes companies for them but I never realized how damaging it can be to the experience for everyone until I saw my GoogleAlert for “Toll Free Numbers” on Monday that showed 7 of the stupidest 1 paragraph pages I’ve ever seen written solely for search engines in order to create a link to TollFreeNumber.org.

Does anyone think this really benefits anyone? (other than the economy of India or some other third world country where they made this junk) Who knows how many more pages they made like this. These are just the ones that showed up on one day, for one term from one company. Imagine if marketing turned into a race to see how many junk pages like this we could make? This is exactly the type of JUNK Google is trying to filter out and even penalize companies for, and justifiably so.

                    Is TollFreeNumber.org making things up?

I saw an article recently posted by TollFreeNumber.org on another site that lets people post things. Maybe they paid for it, it’s not really important. But I noticed that they stated that they provided toll free numbers with fiber optics. That might sound OK to someone that doesn’t know anything about toll free but I have to tell you that’s such a load of crap. I’m sorry but there’s no other way to say that. Here’s what they said:

                    Fiber optics are the best
Like the big companies, TollFreeNumber.org uses fiber optic technology, ensuring clarity and reliability for every phone call, except prices for the customer are typically forty percent cheaper. For a small business owner, cheaper is definitely better, especially when the service is comparable, or even better.”

One way you can prove that this is bogus is to do a search on Google for “toll free” and “fiber optics” the only page that uses the word “toll free” for anything other than mentioning their own toll free number, is tollfreenumber.org’s blog site. I went into the second and third page of search results and still couldn’t find any actual listing that actually used the phrase “toll free” in connection with “fiber optic.”

There’s simply no such thing as Fiber Optic Toll Free Service.

They think they can just make stuff up!Does that mean tollfreenumber.org’s service is somehow different than every other phone company’s? No, they don’t even provide any service themselves. They’re just selling services from other companies, so how can their service really be any different?

You would think that since they’re both telecommunication related if anyone really offered tollfree service with fiber optics they would mention them on the same page, other than in front of their toll free number. Nobody else mentions this though because there is no such thing as “fiber optic toll free” service or non-fiber optic toll free service. The toll free calls are just forwarded to a local number. It just doesn’t work the way they’re implying.

I’m not saying tollfreenumber.org is lieing. This isn’t a lie so much as just a very inappropriate or dumb thing to say. I’m not sure if it’s because they think it sounds good to the consumer who doesn’t know any better or if someone that doesn’t know the business is writing their articles. I’ve pointed out before such as in the 822 number article, so I’m inclined to assume that it’s just because they’re having people who don’t know the business write their pages. I guess that comes from the need to produce so much content. Sometimes you have to take quantity over quality. I won’t link to this from the home page because this isn’t a big deal, but I’ve noticed stuff like this a couple times in their articles so I figured it was worth mentioning.

Why let the facts stand in the way of a good sales pitch, right?

The funny part about this is that TollFreeNumber.org isn’t a phone company. They don’t even actually provide toll free service to customers themselves. They just sell the service of other companies. They are essentially an affiliate site or perhaps more appropriately categorized as a Super Affiliate since they sell for a couple different companies and because they make a little of their own web content. They don’t provide phone lines, they don’t do the customer service, they’re just a website selling other toll free service for other phone companies. There’s nothing wrong with that, but they wouldn’t know a fiber optic cable from an extension cord. They know internet marketing and have to write things they think sound good. But TollFreeNumber.org isn’t a world class provider of anything because they don’t provide it, they just sell it.

The Definition of a “World Class” toll free provider?

TollFreeNumber.org states on their website that they are “a world class provider of toll free number services to small and home based businesses in North America.” What would you think that means?

                        TollFreeNumber.org isn't a World Class anything, they're a “Fake Phone Company‿

Can Authority and Content be totally faked?

We’re all too familiar with the “Content Is King” drum beat. But can content be totally faked and even authority be made up out of thin air? I’ve got an interesting situation in my industry where someone is doing just that! Someone started a website called smsgov.com and they’ve made up what looks like a government organization related to the national toll free number database, that has no ties to anything in the government or the SMS/800 (the equivalent of ICANN for toll free numbers).

Smsgov.com has literally made up over a hundred news articles over the past 4 months or so, about 3/4 of which are based on totally made up material but which sound official. The About Us page says in small print that it isn’t connected to the SMS or any government organization, but the whole site is clearly designed to make visitors think they’re very official and legit.

TollFreeNumber.Org is still repeating fake statistics

spreading lies againI had pointed this out before (TollFreeNumber.org is Lying Again) but for some reason that just posted something with the old fake statistics again yesterday. You can see it on their blog site. Maybe they think if they repeat it a few more times, people will believe it.

I want to say that toll free numbers are beneficial as much as the next Marketer, but how can anyone say with a straight face that customers will receive 6 times more results with a toll free number. It’s reasonable to suggest that adverisers with toll free numbers will get a 10 to 30% improvement if they do it right. But TollFreeNumber.org is inflating the benefit by about 3000%. And they throw out this kind of made up statistics without even pretending to offer any proof or reference to it.

There are a few more examples of why you have to be careful who writes for your website.

                              TollFreeNumber.ORG hacked our website!

That’s right Tollfreenumber.ORG clearly hacked our website to hide the links internally to the posts we’ve written about them. It was very cleverly hidden in the Google Analytics plugin file, googleanalytics.php and it left the links to an article about Hidden Fees the article that showed Tollfreenumber.ORG clearly backdated the age of their organization by several years and second article about Tollfreenumber.ORG making up fake statistics all underlined but with no link. It only affected these posts about TollFreeNumber.Org and it even blocked View Source from working in IE.

I guess that’s one way to respond to someone who shows that you’ve lied about things if it’s true and you really can’t dispute it.

                                Toll Free Number blog headlines

We’re analyzing the headlines at the blog of tollfreenumber.org to show how they do the same lazy post style as SMSgov.COM does and how they’re using both sites to try to create a fake impression that we’re running out of toll free numbers.

Your site was not just informative but extremely helpful and really built trust, which is crucial in business decisions but talking to you in person sealed the deal. You are the kind of person that deserves customer loyalty and ‘earns’ it one customer at a time. I liked that you provided all the details upfront and let me (the customer) make an informed decision too. You definitely know your business and I will be referring friends and associates to your site, trusting that you will handle the business as promptly and professionally as you did mine.

You definitely exceeded my expectations. Thank you for all the work you put into helping me ‘look good’ and make a choice that will mean more business.
