Warning about using the Ameritech Resporg line
I was probably the biggest single user of the Ameritech hotline 800-337-4194 for several years. I had a girl whose job it was for a couple years, just to call spreadsheets full of 800 numbers and then call the Ameritech line for all the numbers that didn’t go through.
That was several years ago. And many of the Resporg names in the system were old several years ago. Now they seem practically ancient. The best example is Qwest. They’re one of the largest Resporgs in terms of numbers, and any Qwest number will say “Lytel Telecom Corporation.â€? And when you Google “Lytel Telecomâ€? do you know how many hits you get ZERO. How old or obscure does a large company name have to be to get zero hits in Google? Lytel is the original name for LCI International, which after several mergers ultimately became Qwest.
Several of the Resporg names are very old and have long merged with other companies. I guess this is partially due to the fact that the telecom world changes pretty fast. Not as fast as Internet startups, or cell phone names but it’s constantly evolving and the Ameritech hotline names have never been changed.
One confusing situation that we just ran into, was with the Resporg WIL01. A representative of a smaller phone company that uses MCI Wholesale who’s Resporg ID is WIL01, thought because it said “Wiltel for the name, that we must have released the number to the wrong company. He still insisted that it wasn’t theirs yet even after we sent him a copy of the request from his own company that requesting it to be switched to WIL01. It was funny, but the point is that you can’t rely on the old names in the Ameritech system. Not a big deal but worth keeping in mind.
If you hear QZA01 (or anything similar) that’s our Resporg ID. They obviously don’t have the names recorded for any of the new Resporgs. Maybe one day we can update this, but for now, it’s free and can still be helpful to check things when you don’t have anything but a phone!
