Unlike regular toll free service which forwards calls straight to a local phone number, enhanced voicemail services forward the calls into their voicemail platform where they can play greetings and menus and then either play recorded messages or route the caller to a predefined list of numbers. These services often cost a little bit more because you have to pay for the voicemail and forwarding, but they give you many more features and a more professional image. These companies also tend to be smaller than regular phone companies and ownership of the numbers is often more of an issue since they are small and can get away with more stuff than a large phone company could.
