If I cancel service can 800pbx keep my number?

“I bought two toll-free numbers from you about a year ago. I contracted with 800PBX to service them and after six months I cancelled the service. About two weeks ago I contacted them about reactivating the service with my numbers since I had never actually ported them away, and they are giving me the run around. When I cancelled with them I specifically told them I did not authorize them to give my numbers away to someone else, and they say that they haven’t. However, for some mysterious reason they say they cannot let me have the numbers back. What do you think about all of this and am I correct in thinking that I own these numbers so they cannot give them away without my authorization?”
You have to keep them active somewhere. You can’t just cancel them without transferring them some where else. I may own season tickets at the Yankees but just because I own them doesn’t mean I own them forever. You do “own them” and they’re even willable from generation to generation. But if you stop paying for them they will of course become available and be given to someone else.
In this case they said they haven’t given it out to someone else. They haven’t been disconnected when I look at the history so I there’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to reactivate them with them or if you wanted to, to transfer away from them. I don’t know why they can’t reactivate it for you there. As far as why they wouldn’t transfer them away, that’s clearly just because they’re being jerks about it. They don’t like it when anyone wants to leave so they make it as hard as possible.
This goes in the Lost and Found section but it’s not as vicious as some situations. The way you describe it makes it sound like they’re doing a little more than dragging their feet, making it difficult for you, not that they’re really intentionally holding your number hostage.
The good news is that because you got it from us, you have proof of ownership and you had them active before you transferred it there and they can’t flatly refuse like they probably would if you got it from them originally. So we can take it back for you if you need us to or you can work with them to get it going again, either way.

You own it but you have to keep it active. at TollFreeNumbers.com says:
