Why would there be a date of 1970?

1970 is the default computer date when there is no date and it essentially means that the number is RESERVED, or at least was at the beginning of the month.

That date is usually the date of the last change in the resporg file. But since reservations occur when a number is in Available status there is no last change date or active since date. So the computer defaults to 1970. I think it has to do with how some computers or programs count the year. But just remember that on our website 1970 means the number was Reserved at the beginning of the month.

    You’ll see a lot of 855 numbers say 1970 now because about half of the 855 numbers that have been removed from the spare or available pool (about 75,000 of them) are still in reserved status.
