This really is the most important part of finding the very best toll free number for your business.  Because if you don't know what all the options are, you can't make the best decision.  But if you've been really creative and thorough, and come up with and checked ALL the possibilities, it's easy to make a solid decision for your business.

You may think the best or even the only name for your business is obvious.  But we usually tell all our clients that there is usually a hundred names or ways to say almost anything, and if you don't come up with 50 to 100 names, you're not serious or trying hard enough.  In some especially difficult industries, such as the legal profession or concepts that have a lot of room for creativity, you should double that at least (and that doesn't count generic terms).

Some Great Tools for Brainstorming

We've collected the very best tools for brainstorming here to help with this process.  They'll help you come up with dozens of other related terms which you can use to come up with often a hundred or more good potential vanity numbers for your business.

Use these links and copy and paste the results into a document over and over again, then print it out and attack it with a pen.  There's something about seeing them all on paper and being able to make notes and draw lines to connect words.  Combine all the possible words in every possible combination.  Combine them with all the prefixes and in an hour you can usually come up with nearly a hundred decent possibilities.  This may seem like a lot of work, but it is probably the most valuable work you can do to come up with

  • A good starting point is the  Virtual Thesaurus, one of the most interesting writing tools, to explore other potential words and ways to get your message across.

  • Another similar service that will help with synonyms and more is Wordsmyth.net

  • After you have a couple names and need to add some more, try KWmap.net.  It's a cool keyword utility that is like a map of internet keywords.  Just enter a word or two at a time and collect all the related words.

  • Another good place to start if you have a website is keywordcount.com.  Use the maximum (50) top keywords and then try the subpages of your site or even competitors.  Copy the results to your document (or use a spreadsheet as an interim step to copy just the words column).

  • Google, the king of search has a new Search Phrase Suggestion tool too!  Enter your core words and get a list of potential key words and relevant phrases.

  • Then when you have all the possible relevant terms use the Overture Search Phrase Suggestion Tool with as many of those terms as possible to come up with how people use those words and all the words that can be connected with your terms.  Repeat this as often as possible, copying and pasting the results into your results document.  This is a great way to find what people are actually looking for and how much.  Another site that combines Overture results with WordTracker results is digitalpoint.

  • Another must try site is my new favorite, the ClickMojo Suggestion Tool.  It's very simple to use, fast and will also help you with domain names and keyword meta tags too.  Run this several times, copying and pasting the results to get the whole universe of possibilities for your name.

  • Another similar new search phrase suggestion tool is the SLI Search Suggestion Tool  Use this to find related terms and phrases you might not of thought of.  It doesn't give you as many as Overture or JimTools.

  • Use DeletedDomains.com to take a look at some deleted or expiring domain names that contain your core word to get ideas of what words other people connect with or use in conjunction with your core word.  And you might even find a good domain name too.  This is one of my best tools!

  • Another one of my favorite domain name related tools is Whois.net.  Use this to find lists of domain names containing the word you're considering.  This is helpful because it shows what words people connect with the word you're looking for.  Don't forget to check the deleted domains there too.  Another similar site is DomainSurfer.

  • Last, but certainly not least, use my Prefix/Suffix List of 2, 3 & 4 digit words sorted by popularity.  Use this list of short words to combine with your core word to turn just one word into dozens and dozens of possibilities.

  • Try posting a message at IdeaCafe's business name Forum

Another important tip is to involve other people.  Print out and give them the results document of all your research to see what they come up with, or have a contest.  Then spread it out over the table or on the floor and attack it with a pen.  Your goal is to put as much ink on the paper as possible.  You'll wind up with the whole universe of possibilities, and a great list of potential names.

One Tip on doing this when you're working for or report to someone else

If you have to report to someone making a big list and being thorough will make you look good, but don't give them your total list until after you've gone through it to find any possibilities first.  Because if you give them the full list, they will tell you what they like, and ask you to pursue those.  And 90% of that list is going to be impossible.  So narrow it down to numbers that have some possibility if you can first.  That way you they will be picking from numbers that have some possibility rather than telling you to try to get ones that just aren't available.

Have you ever misspelled something you were searching for?  It's estimated that 5 to 10% of all searches contain typos or misspellings.  And when someone searches for a typo and it's found on your Web page you'll have a lot less competition and often appear in the top 10 results.  So it's a good idea to add typos to your page.  Add some to the bottom of your pages for some extra traffic.

Here's a cool tool you can use to find them too.
