Locating the customer
The next step once you have the customer information before you call them is to research them a little. You don’t just need to find them, you need to know as much as you can about what they’re like, and what their interests and goals are. You’ll want to know this for a couple reasons. If the number is in disconnect and it is related to their business, they may just reactivate it and keep it, so exercise some caution especially if it sounds related.
If you want to get them to give up the number it helps to know who they are and what their hot buttons are. This is especially true in a negotiation like this for something that has a soft value like a toll free number does. That means there is no book value so the price will vary a lot more depending on their attitude towards you. So it’s even more important to establish a relationship and even a friendship if possible than it is for most other negotiations.Even after you get the customer information it can often be difficult to find anyone, especially for disconnected numbers. There is often a reason why the number was disconnected and they may no longer be at the same address or the company may not exist at all any more. You often can’t just call the ring to number or lookup the name. However, you can usually find someone that knows them if you search on that address and contact neighbors, landlords or the current occupant of that address.
If it’s a corporation, you can lookup the records with the secretary of state for the officers. That will get you some additional names and addresses. In any case, it may not be easy to find anyone left from the old company, but it is possible if you work at it.
If the search tools you use, don’t find anything, try MasterFiles.com. It costs a few bcks but its better than any free lookup tools in my opinion. I learned about this site from a private investigator’s only course I attended. Either that or you can use the private investigators in my links section for help tracking them down too.
