Changing the Ring To Number
Just put in a request
Move to a new company
Request a “negotiation” for real misprints

Sometimes you can change the ring to number of a toll free number through your phone calls to customer service.  Changing a number doesn’t technically change or affect the ownership of the number.  But if a number is ringing to you, you can set up an account with AT&T because they have a phone verification process and can put in a request to transfer a toll free number without any paperwork as long as it rings to you.  They are the only ones that will transfer a number without any paperwork. If you say the number is out of service and request it to be yanked away, some phone companies will have the SMS800 help desk yank it.  If nobody complains there may be no response.  It’s not usually the right way to do things, but some companies such as Onebox.com, Integra Telecom, or Toll Free Express will do this (some may charge a small fee for it).

Sometimes you just have to give it a try. Especially if you find out the correct customer information, you can always put in a request for it.  What have you got to lose?  You might want to set up an account with one of the enhanced voicemail services or a small carrier under that name.

If you do get a number transferred through persistence or creative/clever efforts, don’t keep I there forever.  Keep it there a few months and then transfer it away to a new carrier (preferably a smaller one that is their own Resporg) that has no history with that number with also else.

If a number isn’t being used by a Resporg you can sometimes call up your resporg (Sorry, I can’t usually do this for you) and explain that you’ve misprinted some material with that number.  You will need to be able to show what you misprinted and it has to look totally convincing.  If it’s really not in use, some companies may release it in that situation.  Do NOT even think about doing this for a number that is Resporg Locked or has any real customer information.

Advanced Tip:  If someone balks at “selling” you the number, you can ask to buy the territory they’re not using.  Sometimes this can be a good solution or sometimes that can be a good to get past the initial objection and then you can later, after they’ve started to get excited about the money, you can say the president or your partner or someone said they just can’t do it without the whole number.  You could also do it more subtly by offering to include free toll free service for life.  That ultimately means that you are now the one paying the bill and hence the end user of record” or owner and that puts you much more in control.

I tried to register the toll free number through ATT. After filling out the online form, I received the message that I got my number and an account representative would call me in next 24 hours. After waiting for three days, I called ATT small business sales to find out what happened. After being on hold for 12 minutes, finally a human voice! I was asked about 10 questions and then placed on a five minute hold again. Finally the person again came on line and told me that even though the number I wanted was available, ATT could not reserve it!

I went online and logged onto Bill Quimby's web site and filled out the application form. Instantly, my number was activated and functional. Unbelievable service and efficiency!

    Thanks again.
