Calling the phone company

The best approach is usually to act like it’s your number.  If they ask for a business name, I usually say I’m not sure which account it’s under.  We’ve merged so many companies and just give a generic name or initials.  Sometimes you can guess at the type of company it might be connected to based on the purpose of the vanity number, especially if it’s a generic or popular term.

Ultimately you’re looking for a company name.  Then with the internet you can find some possible cities and get them to confirm or correct the city.  Once you have the name and city, you can often get everything else via the internet and one more call can confirm that too.

You’ll need to call multiple times, and you’ll find some people will be more helpful and responsive than others.  It’s also very important to write down at least the first name of anyone you talk to, the office or city they’re in, as well as the time and date too.  This will be very helpful for you in several ways. One of biggest mistakes most people make is, believing what phone company representative says.  Never believe anything significant without verifying the information with 2 or more representatives.  (See Phone companies do make mistakes)  I don’t have anything against phone company representatives.  I have friends and acquaintances in most phone companies.  I just have a lot of experience on this side of it and know how a little miscommunication can mess a project like this up.

You also have to realize that most Telco reps get “Cubicalitis”.  The two most common symptoms are:  1.  If they can’t find something in their computer, they don’t think it exists, and 2.  If they don’t know how to do something they think it can’t be done.  Cubicalitis is caused by working too long in a cubical and relying to much on a computer.  In many cases a loss of common sense may occur and in severe cases it can even decrease ones ability to think for themselves.

It’s also a given that the first job of most people in a really large organization is basically C.Y.A.  The larger companies are generally more difficult because they tend to be less “human”.  The smallest companies are also difficult for different reasons because you may get the same person on subsequent calls, which is one of the reasons to always keep track of who you’ve spoken to.  Also keep in mind that the other person has some lee way on how they do their job and how much to help you.  That’s why the overall goal of this process is to make a friend, because that approach will get you a lot further than anything else.  By the way girls are often better at this than men for some reason ;-)

Another cool trick is to try to get the billing dept to fax you a copy of their bill.  Try this when the old customer owes money because the collections dept only cares about getting the money and will give you almost everything else you need.  And a bill copy is a home run because it is guaranteed to be accurate and have everything you could possibly need.  It helps if you have a toll free number going to your fax number though, because then they won’t question why you’re in a different area code.

    jigsaw lookup
A good tool to use when calling the phone company is Jigsaw.com. When you get a company name enter it in at Jigsaw.com and it’ll help you find company info. It helps to cut down on the noise and connect you with the real names.

      Hi Bill,

First, let me say that I think your service and the accessibility of it to the average person is a real boon and an exceptional value. If it is at all possible for me to utilize your services as I search for a toll free number, I fully intend to give you the business.

Second, following up on your guidance in “digging deeper” – I have checked my “1st choice” number on AT&T’s AnyWho and my search did not return information on the customer, but did provide a link to another information service called “Intelius” which purports to have current information on the owner of the number, including contact phone and address, among other things. To purchase this information from Intelius would cost me only about $5, but I wanted to ask your opinion 1st. Are you aware of this company? If so, have they been instrumental in providing useful information to parties seeking to obtain a number from current owners?

Also, to be clear, when you say that the number I am seeking is “with Sprint” does that mean that Sprint is the owner of the number? And is there any way to determine whether they own it for their own use or for the use of one of their customers?

      Thanks for your input!

        Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the nice comments. We really can’t tell who the end user is, only the phone company responsible for the number. It is presumed that they have a customer. The only way to find out is to dial the number, or if that doesn’t work to just call up the phone company.

You can also look at our new ALL.TollFreeNumbers.com directory. I don’t have the list of numbers that anywho has information on but I do for gotollfree.com and a few others.

I don’t know very much about Intelius. I don’t recall the link and I don’t think they can really do very much for $5. Good luck with it and there’s not much to lose to at least make a few phone calls. Let me know how it goes and if you have any other questions.

Another company wanted to charge $748 a month to "lease" a phone number I bought for $49.95 on your site! The search function was great, too. We are launching a radio infomercial about a nanotechnology energy patch and wanted something easy to remember and that tied into our message. We got 1-800-95-REVIVE. Thanks for a great service! I am SO glad I found your site!

Your service is so easy and convenient to use. This is the 2nd time I've used you to start my toll free number and today, you had it up and ringing in to my local phone in less than 5 minutes - amazing.

For the price you charge, $49.95 you've saved me hours and hundreds of dollars in time.

          Thank you,

I used to be in the Wireless business and KNOW for a fact that your services are needed, whether people know it or not!! I used to own over 180 (one hundred eighty) toll free numbers! It was literally impossible to request a vanity number from any of my providers, when my customers asked I told them to forget about it! Your service is very valuable for the people who know that time is MONEY!!

Your site was a very lucky find for our company. We are brand new in the travel business and had no idea how to get started with toll free numbers other than we wanted one close to our name or our parent companies name. Your E-book and site made it all very simple to deal with.

We searched for hours and it seemed like everything was taken. We couldn't find anything that worked for our business but you came up with some amazing "1-800" options. We love the one you got us, 1-800 TRIM KING and have had a lot of customers compliment us on it. I would recommend you to anyone!

Much to my surprise, my toll free number was up and running in less than 12 hours! Bill and his support team answered all my questions personally and put my number into place faster than I could ever expect any corporate phone company to do. Now that I am up and running, Bill still takes the time to answer all of my "after the sale" questions promptly and with great detail. Even If I knew the process of going about getting my own toll free number with no help, I would still have used Bill's service because of the information and speed he provides. When I add more numbers in the future, this is the first place I will be to get it done.
