Not only should you not get your vanity number from the service you want to use it with so you’re guaranteed to be able to move it or take it with you if you have to leave, but if you want one of the enhanced voicemail services or hosted PBX services, you should sign up with a random number and test it out before transferring your vanity number over. Make sure you like the way it works before committing to it. You might even want to sign up at two different services and compare them before committing to one. They’ll be different in subtle and even some, not so subtle ways, that you couldn’t have foreseen ahead of time.

Regular toll free service is the same no matter what phone company you get it from but the enhanced voicemail services vary much more, from company to company. I often use a milkshake analogy explaining that the difference between milk shake companies is much more than between regular phone companies. And if your phones go out or are spotty or poor quality, it’s definitely going to affect your business very dramatically. So if it’s not a company that you know, and you can afford to take some additional time, it’s definitely worth it to test it for yourself before committing to it.
