Do some companies stretch the truth?
Unfortunately in the toll free world there isn’t really any phone police or anyone that validates anything. That’s probably also true of a lot of Internet Marketing companies. And I don’t do this to knock the product or people in question. I haven’t reviewed or compared their product at all. I’m just using what appears to be a slightly exaggerated claim to point out what I wrote about recently, that there’s a lot of misleading things out there.
I saw a new company I hadn’t seen before, or at least don’t remember seeing before. Their domain name was messagingservice.com and their site said that they are in business since 1997. I quit my full time job and started my business in 1995 and I was curious because I hadn’t heard of them. So I figured I’d take a closer look.
Their website says they have no sales people and sell exclusively through the internet website and past customer referrals. That means unless they started with salespeople and moved over to internet sales along the way, it should be easy to look at Archive.org to see their history and when they started their website.
As you can see by the image above they only started their website in 2001. I also checked their current toll free number and it was set up in 2002. Looking back at their original site, the first toll free number they had was in 877.281.6200 which was set up October 2002. Before that, although they were selling toll free numbers, they only had a local number.
This doesn’t prove that they weren’t in business since 1997, but it does cast some doubt on it. And it’s not so much what year they actually started that matters, the point is that if they will stretch the truth somehow about this, you have to wonder what other things they’ll stretch the truth about. Tollfreenumber.org claims something very similar, that Tollfreenumber.org was started in 1999 yet the owner admitted that he was selling web hosting in 1999 and claimed that date because he had a link for toll free service on his website in 1999. There are actually several other examples of that kind of truth stretching at tollfreenumber.org but you get the idea.
