Someone emailed me a question that comes up sometimes. It’s is a very simple question and there are a couple ways to answer it. I figured it was worth posting so I could try to tie all of the aspects of that question together in one place.

Crunching the 800 Number Database explains how big the database is and how many numbers are available. There are about 25 million toll free numbers active and 7 million available. That makes it a little hard for the computer to tell you which ones are the best in general.
We are actually working on a system to do this by logging all of the queries that people make on our website. We already do it to some degree by logging and then analyzing the 33,000 or so 800 Watch reports we send out each month. We even published a list of the top 2,500 numbers in the available pool. We can’t do this for the disconnected numbers because that would help the vanity number sharks way too much and hurt our chances of getting those numbers for our customers.
That question is kind of like asking GoDaddy for a list of just the best domains available right now. If there was really a list of all of the best numbers available, not only would it be out of date by the time you printed it but they would probably all be taken already. That’s why unfortunately There really is No Short Cut.
So the bottom line is that you have to just do some searching. I guess to conclude this long answer to a simple question, the bad news is that you still need to work at it a little to find the best numbers for your business. The good news though, is that it’s a lot more valuable than you probably realized at first too.
