Don’t build on someone else’s rented property!

Renting 800 numbers through shared use is dangerous

If you invest in and build a physical building on property that you are only renting, you are putting yourself more and more at the mercy of the owner. That’s because it’s hard to move a physical building. You’re not building up any equity from your rent, and you’re not building up any equity from all of the investment you’re making in the building either. Advertising your business with else’s phone number is the same thing because you’re building your brand name on someone else’s property. So not only the rent goes to them but every dollar of advertising builds up THEIR equity, not yours.

Don’t invest all your advertising to build up someone else’s brand name

If it’s someone in the vanity number business you better believe that they know this too and in many cases have built their business around that with almost a drug dealer like business plan, getting you hooked and then raising up the rent, and/or the usage charges and fees etc. They may tell you that they have a contract so it’s very safe, but who do you think wrote their contract? Do you think they wrote it to limit their power and empower you or do you think it was written to limit your power and empower them?

You went into business to be more in control, so don’t hand control over your business to someone else.

The bottom line is that no matter how good you think a landlord seems or sounds, it’s never a good idea to leave yourself or your business at someone else’s mercy. They may not intend to take advantage of you, but it’s hard for anyone to stay competitive and do a good job when there’s actually a natural incentive to cut corners and raise the rates. If your customers had to use your product or service and couldn’t leave, would you work late and keep the rates the same or would you charge a little extra and leave early?

Some companies may be renting numbers without even telling you

The devious part is that many of the smaller companies you find on the web are masquerading as regular phone companies and trying to lure in customers who don’t realize that the fine print of their contract says that they own the numbers they provide as well. So even if you’re not dealing with someone who talks about shared use and charges a monthly rental fee, if you’re dealing with a small company you’ve never heard of before and haven’t researched thoroughly you can fall into that same trap.

Actually in some ways it’s even use because if you use a company like EasyTel.net, just as an example, you would think they are a very professional looking site and service. But after you spend a lot of money advertising a toll free number you got and use through their service when you try to transfer it away, you’re going to be in for a big surprise when they tell you that you were only renting THEIR number.

So you have to avoid not only the sharks that want to rent you numbers, but the internet based services that let you search for and find a number through them because you can still get surprised in the end. The only way sure to avoid getting stuck like that is to get your number independently and transfer it to them. Some companies like Onebox will still charge you hidden fees if you want to leave, but it’s definitely better than finding out you’re at their mercy and are held hostage by your phone number.

“Thanks for your prompt and efficient service. You helped us identify and track toll-free numbers that may be useful to us – and to lock one in as soon as it became available. Without your service, we certainly would have spent a lot more time and money trying to secure a good number. In our business, we always try to provide something that is ‘better, faster and cheaper’ and those qualities certainly apply to your service. Thanks again.?

Thanks again for all your help. You're insight has been extremely valuable and saved me from a ton of confusion and frustration. When the time comes, my customers will benefit greatly from having an easy to remember 800 number to call when they need my help and my business will benefit from that customer service benefit alone.

I fell in love with this site and your service on my very first order. I had ordered a number through AT&T, who said it would take 4-5 days to get the number. Then I noticed your site in my Google search results, so I clicked on it. I said to myself 'what the heck - I'll give these guys a try', and ordered the same number through you -- and got it in 5 minutes! (AT&T called back later to apologize that they couldn't get the number, and I told them I understood...)

Since then we have purchased many numbers through you and it is awesome.

As a small business just starting out, my experience with your company has been truly exceptional! I was stunned to discover that you were able to get the vanity number of my choice. You not only IMMEDIATELY located and reserved that toll-free number for my company, but activated it INSTANTLY. You also went above and beyond the call of duty in customer service--including taking a phone call from me and answering endless questions late on a Friday night. That was very impressive! I am simply thrilled that I bumped into your website when I did. I honestly couldn't be more satisfied. Thank you so much for your help in setting up 877-MY-LASSO!

I just wanted to let you know, " so far, so good!" I just received the notice that my new 800 number is up and working and now feel confident in having my marketing material published with the objective of making money with that number in the forefront. I want to thank you for your advice and information and expeditious service. I've already recommended you to a few friends of mine who are planning to upgrade their telecommunication systems.

I think your independence is your strength and your site does a good job of clarifying that. I've already given your address to someone who's shopping for toll free service. Keep up the good work.

When my first national commercial was about to run, our agency said we needed an 800 number. I was so worried we were over our head in a complex issue with a time sensitive deadline. YOU MADE IT SO EASY for us. We were able to search some great 800 ideas, you patiently took every one of my calls and even helped us get the number ported on a Sunday evening no less.

I have been in business for 25 years and believe that customer service is our most valuable asset. I appreciate someone like your self who feels that this is your mission as it is mine to get every little girl down the aisle in a pretty DRESSY KID flower girl dress. (Get the pun?) Needless to say, we choose 877-dressy-kid and picked up the URL as well, pointing it and our new 800 number to Pegeen.com

Bill, I appreciate you so much,,,,as I said, when my staff begun to panic, I said , "Hey Bill Quimby at TollFreeNumbers, com is handling it" and I knew you would.
Witness your reply to me at 12:35 am on a Sunday night.

I was very pleased with your service. It was easy to check if my vanity number was available. But what I appreciated more was the assistants in finding the appropriate phone service to transfer my number to. I was asked what my needs were and I was told the most reliable and cost efficient company to use. As a commercial real estate broker I don't have the time checking every phone service available. I even got a discount mentioning your name. Now I call that service.
