The “Unlimited” Toll Free shell game

unlimited flat rate 800 serviceSo called “Unlimited” toll free plans, sometimes called “flat rate” 800 services, are kind of an all you can eat for one price concept. They’re made to look and sound good but they’re mostly scams that take advantage of people who don’t realize how little toll free service they actually need or they’re used to attract customers and then once they’ve adverted the numbers and gotten things going enough to come out ahead they’re forced to switch over to more expensive plans. It’s kind of like the carnival games that look easy to win, but the game is fixed by the house and the fine print makes it almost impossible to actually come out ahead.

I’m not going to mention any companies selling this by name right now because I’m not writing this to hurt or piss off anyone. But I may add that later when the provider section is done. This isn’t about any one company, although you can certainly mention or ask about specific companies in the comments below. This is about something that I believe a number of people are falling victim too, and someone needs to point out that the emperor really has no clothes. This is a follow up to an old page about unlimited toll free service from a couple years ago.

I can be more honest and tell you about this for several reasons.

  • With 13 years of experience in the forefront of the toll free industry typically emailing or talking to 50 to 100 people per day I personally interact with tens of thousands of people per year about toll free service.
  • I’m the only one in the toll free world not even trying to sell anything that competes with it.
  • I worked on a project to offer flat rate toll free service a while ago and actually still have several flat rate 800 number domain names.
  • I’m my own boss and can be more honest than anyone that works at a big phone company because they can be fired. Nobody can fire me.

There are 3 main reasons why so called unlimited services really don’t work for most customers.

1. Most customers never justify the cost.

One of the companies we work with showed us the numbers on their whole book of toll free only customers (toll free service with no other long distance or other service) and the average monthly usage for thousands of customers is $12 and change. This combined with the fact that nearly all toll free customers almost universally seem to over estimate their use, means that a lot of people are paying $49 per month for $12 worth of actual service. Ironically the people who need it the least (the smallest customers with no idea how low their usage will be) for some reason tend to be the ones the flat rate unlimited services appeals to the most.

2. You’ll over pay at least a couple hundred bucks

Even if you’re going to use enough to justify the cost it’ll take you several months to ramp up. I also think the number one rule in starting a small business is that everything takes longer and costs more than you think it should. You also don’t control the amount of calls you get to your toll free number. It takes a while to get the new advertising produced and out there and then fine tuned again before people even begin to call. So you’ll almost always pay for at least a couple hundred bucks of service that you don’t use before things even start to ramp up.

3. It’s not really as unlimited as you thought

Then once you do manage to really get your business going enough to justify the monthly cost and actually start coming out ahead you’ll find that it’s not quite as unlimited as you thought. The system is actually designed to look and sound unlimited, like you’re going to get more than you’re paying for, but in the end you find out the system is “fixed” to look great but actually favors the house and gives them all of the control and power. And when they shut off you’re phones you’ll be surprised how easy it is to agree to almost any fee or penalty they impose because you were “threatening” the network (or at least it’s profitability).

So after paying a fee to reconnect your toll free number they’ll just make you switch to a per minute plan with a not so competitive rate. That’s when you ask them if there’s any hidden fees to release your 800 number to another carrier and hope they don’t hold you hostage.

No reputable company offers “Unlimited” 800 service.

Another red flag that indicates that it’s less than honest is that some of these plans won’t transfer toll free numbers in (or out!). They won’t transfer toll free numbers in because they don’t want big customers to transfer really high volume numbers in and run up a large bill before they shut it down. They typically won’t transfer numbers out because then once you’ve advertised the 800 number, you won’tever be able to move or stop paying them.

They count on the fact that it takes a while to ramp up most programs. They also count on the fact that they can shut you down or hold your number hostage and that the cost of missing that volume of calls is so high that you’ll agree to anything. Plus in many cases these companies are often the same type of company that don’t let you transfer numbers out, so they can make you switch to a per minute plan and then keep you there for a long time.

The bundles or blocks of 800 minutes some toll free companies offer are also a variation of the same thing. Again, no major phone company sells minutes that way because it’s just a trick to charge people for minutes they’re not using. Even if you do use enough once you get going most companies take several months to ramp up. Those blocks of minutes aren’t as bad as the unlimited scams, but they are a variation of the same thing you should avoid.

If you use consistently just a little more than you’re paying for but never a lot more, you can probably come out ahead. But most businesses have cycles, seasons or growth spurts and you’d hate to have your phones shut off in the middle of your growth spurt. My advice is to get an honest company with a competitive rate and hope that your bill is very high because that means your advertising is working and you’re probably going to be making a lot of money.

You would think if what the advertising and webpages for the unlimited service said was true, that the largest companies would be the ones that want it the most. But it’s not what it appears to be. The bottom line is that there’s a reason why no large customer uses this type of service, and why no regular phone company anywhere, offers this service. It’s not hard to make a page that looks good and sounds good. And as long as they get rid of the larger customers they can take advantage of a lot of people that don’t realize how inexpensive toll free service really is. I just don’t want them to take advantage of YOU!

Feel free to post any specific feedback you’ve had with these plans. But if you offer this type of service don’t pretend to be a customer.

By the way, I’ve intentionally been adding more posts like this about other providers recently for a reason. We’re working quite a bit on the Providers Section of our site and want to have both a directory of researched providers as well as several articles that relate to some of them too

One of the companies that this definitely applies to is Value800. They are the epitomy of a fake phone company and have a number of red flags like offering an “unlimited” service with hidden limitations. They also won’t let you transfer a number in or out etc.

I should also point out that some websites are confusing or even misleading because they say “unlimited incoming calls” and they also say you can have a toll free number as well as the local one, and when you say those things together it can look like they are offering unlimited incoming toll free calls, but the unlimited incoming calls are on the local number. You can have a toll free number but those calls aren’t unlimited! So it may not even be what you are thinking it is.

Another trick I’ve noticed some companies doing is saying that they offer “Unlimited Toll Free Numbers” with their service. That doesn’t mean that they don’t charge for the incoming calls. It only means that they will giv you an unlimited number of toll free numbers going to that phone line.

It can also be interpretted to mean that they’ll give you toll free numbers that aren’t ‘limited’. In other words you can get as many incoming calls as you want on your toll free number. They don’t limit you to a certain number of calls per month.

So there are a lot of ways to say things that aren’t quite lying but they are designed to trick people!

          Bill

          Both of these things

              Gordon,

I looked at their website and they talk about free unlimited incoming calls, but I don’t think that refers to the local number calls, not toll free calls.

Their website doesn’t say very much about toll free numbers. I had to use Google to even find any pages that mentioned anything about toll free. The FAQs mention it, but don’t mention price.

If you see somewhere that actually says free incoming toll free calls, I’ll be very surprised. I’m not saying they’re intentionally misleading, but they’re certainly not very clear and it’s not what you’re assuming it is.

I coppied this from their pricing page. Get an 800-number
                with unlimited minutes
Get an 800-number with no charges for minutes for the same prices as a regular number. (Offer good through 04/30/09)

I think this falls under the heading of getting what you pay for, there’s no such thing as a free lunch, or if it sounds too good to be true it’s not.

But if you can’t help yourself despite logic and people that know what they’re doing warning you, just make sure you come back and tell us what the catch was afterwards. Because there is one.

I definitley thought that there was a catch to this which is how I found your site. My main concern was that they would try to bill my card for an outragious overage amount. So I made sure to at least get that in writing that they wouldn’t do that. I’ll definitley come back here and let everyone know when I get shut off for using too many minutes.

I don’t think you’re going to get shut off for using too many minutes, you’re probably just going to wind up paying some fee per minute. Just because it’s a voip company doesn’t mean that toll free calls are free.

You found ONE small mention that says the toll free minutes are free. Yet every place you would expect to see that if it were true it’s not there. It’s a new service and that one mention is probably just wrong. That would be my guess.

Ask the conference call company if they provide toll free service and you can transfer an existing number over to their system. If they do they’ll give you a form to transfer it over.

                              Katy,

The first thing you need to do right away is read:
                              http://www.tollfreenumbers.com/blogs/transferring-800-numbers/unlimited-or-flat-rate-trap.html

Not transferring numbers is a huge red flag. A couple very dubious companies do that because they are either lazy, or more likely because they don’t want anyone to be able to transfer a number from them away if they advertise it. Real companies don’t try to use ownership of the number to hold their customers hostage but the disreputable companies usually do.

Why else would they feel they have to refuse to release a number for a company they doesn’t want to use them any more? And how will you feel if you use the number and either advertise it or circulate it to everyone and then your needs change or you decide you don’t want to use them any more for any reason, but they refuse to release THEIR number!

Your ability to transfer the number is what keeps them honest. (http://www.tollfreenumbers.com/blogs/onebox/importance-of-800-ownership.html) Would you want to use a business that feels they can’t be honest and keep your business by doing a good job?

This is for Gordon (or anyone wondering about Toktumi)…

Toktumi’s TFN is legit. You’ll be billed $14.95 per month for unlimited inbound and outbound calls. No additional fees or hidden charges. I’ve had it for 6 months now and have never been charged anything but $14.95

I currently use Toktumi and only have a TFN (no local number needed.)

When Toktumi works it is great. Calls are usually pretty clear and I’ve never had an issue placing a call. Unfortunately, the reason I’m online looking for unlimited toll free services is because of the countless times that friends, family, or customers have told me that they couldn’t get ahold of me because my “phone wasn’t working.” I can deal with the first two callers, but when I’m missing out on potential sales it’s unacceptable.

As far as the “phone not working,” the issues included: dead-air after dialing, a busy-like signal, or an auto-attendant feature that just repeated the main menu regardless of the callers selection.

I’ve contacted Toktumi numerous times and they were always very responsive and tried their best to help. That would explain why I’ve stayed on with them this long. Unfortunately I can’t afford to miss potential sales anymore.

I hope this helps others and if you do decide to use them I hope your experience is better!

That’s another way it could really cost you. If you’re having all these problems or issues isn’t that just another way that you’re essentially paying for it?

First and foremost, I hope I didnt come across like I was trying to promote toktumi.com. That was not my intention. I simply was just trying to state that there was a service who offered unlimited incoming toll free calls as well as unlimited outgoing. I personally have used them for about 7 mos now and have not had any issues what so ever. And as they move closer to the end of their beta stage, I have seen improvments more and more actually. Again this is just my experiences and I am not trying to discredit anyone else at all. I do know some people who have had the same types of issues as you did Brandon, and once they got the phone adapter to use along with the soft phone/virtual attendant software, they didnt have the problem anymore. I started out with using the adapter, so maybe that is why I have not had any issues. Who knows. I also had found them when they were in there alpha stage and so I know there has been problems, but they are working through them(at least from what I can tell). But I am not recommending nor not recommending them, I just was expressing my experiences with them and for the amount of incoming toll free calls that I receive, I was not able to find a service that would fit in with my budget feasably. But this has more than ever and has been such a great help for me at least. But everyone has there own perspective and I respect that. I can only speak for myself and my outcomes on the toktumi.com service.

Some people like them, but I think they tend to be the type of customer that doesn’t use as much as they think they do. Unfortunately there’s really no free lunch. And you probably wouldn’t want to pay the average business phone bill if you’re just a small business getting started, no matter how big you think you’ll be later on. And the cost of a phone call is so cheap today I don’t think you really need to work that hard to find a way around it in order to make money in any business.

If it was the panacea that the people trying to sell it, try to make it look like, why would any large customer not be using it? Unfortunately large customers know it’s not the answer, for the same reason why you don’t see large phone companies offering unlimited plans.

Just wanted to thank you for your help. I never expected to reach you on my first try and was pleasantly surprised there was no "press one for ...press two for... " etc. You took the time to answer all my questions.
With patience and a little luck I secured one of the best vanity numbers I could hope for. I am so happy with it, I am currently in the process of changing the company name to the vanity number.
