5 reasons why it’s Harder to get a good Toll Free Number than a good Domain Name.
A toll free number only has 7 digits that matter while domain names can have any amount but often have two or even three times as many digits. That means the amount of possible domain names is exponentially higher than the possible phone numbers for any area code.
1. There’s no whois lookup for 800 numbers or simple way to track down who owns a toll free number (although we do have a private investigator to get the customer name and address if necessary for you).
2. There’s also no easy way to tell if they would be willing to sell a toll free number to you. There’s no easy way to ask them because they’re usually not used to or considering selling their phone number. The only one that usually has the customer information is the phone company responsible.
3. There’s no resale market for toll free numbers. There are several websites available and places to submit offers to owners of domain names. It’s also much harder to find people interested in a good toll free number, than the owner of a toll free number ever imagines.
4. There are more shadows and less scrutiny by FCC of the more closed nature of toll free numbers and relatively little oversight or monitoring. There are fake phone companies, websites Locking Up numbers on their visitors, Mass Misdial Marketing companies hoarding millions of numbers just to make money from the wrong numbers and some people even steal 800 numbers. All of these things definitely give the industry a bad name and make it harder for even large legitimate customers to get a good number.
5. There’s also a lot of dis-information in this business, which comes from people repeating things they heard other people say or just telling people something that sounds good. The best and most common example of this might be that it’s illegal to sell a toll free number. It’s against the regulations to hoard or broker numbers which isn’t the same thing. Some of the people saying that do it because it’s in their own best interest too. It’s funny how customers will believe the strangest most illogical things if a representative from a large phone company tells it to them.
For all of these reasons and probably at least one or two more, it’s actually harder in many cases to get a good vanity ’800′ number than it is to get a good domain name. If you have any comments or other reasons, leave some comments. And watch for reasons why you need to look for a toll free number BEFORE you commit to your domain name.
