How to use multiple numbers and still build recognition?
Here’s a question I got about the benefits of using one good vanity number versus using different numbers for tracking purposes so you can measure the ROI. There are certainly a lot of people that do both benefits on both sides.
I’ve been debating whether to use multiple phone numbers when marketing so that I can trace which numbers people are calling and to see what my ROI is for marketing campaigns. However, I feel that this also dilutes the ability to market a single memorable phone number in ALL marketing efforts and can distract customers from the brand I’m trying to portray. What do you feel is a better strategy? Go with one number that people will remember? Or go with multiple numbers so that marketing ROI will be traceable? OR is there another method that you know that I haven’t enough considered?
I think the answer comes down to your priorities and to some extent the numbers you can find too.
A good vanity number increases the response rate because advertising requires repetition because people aren’t computers and most things require repetition to become memorable and recognized. And since a word can be recognized and become memorable faster it increases the response rate.
So obviously if you find your exact company name you’re going to want to favor that and get it out there as much as possible. There are certainly ways of tracking sources without using different numbers. It’s just that using different numbers is one of the easiest and is 100% effective so it’s very attractive. But just because you can’t use the one exact match doesn’t mean you can’t use something that’s still a little more memorable and still gives you the advantages of seperate trackable numbers.
Compromise with a Partial Vanity Number.
One good solution is to look for a partial vanity number, or a number that includes two or three digits in front of a memorable word. That often allows you to get multiple numbers that are similar and will build recognition, but still using different numbers for tracking purposes. It’s nice if you have a small 4 or 5 digit word, but even if your word is longer it’s alright to have a few extra digits.
Vanity numbers in ‘800’ are quite difficult to get so you’ll probably have to go with 888, 877 or 866, in order to get multiple numbers that look similar and build recognition but still meet your tracking needs. One customer we had a while ago, Mr. Sandless, tell each of his franchisees to come to our website and look for a number ending in WOOD. That way they all have their own number to advertise but they are all building recognition for each other too. This is a great idea for any type of franchise or organization with multiple numbers even if they don’t specifically need it for tracking purposes.
Sequential or Similar 800 Numbers
Another idea is to use sequential numbers or numbers that are very similar to each other. We can check for sequential numbers for you. It’s best to do that over the phone because there’s one feature in the web based sms/800 access that we haven’t included in the look up tool and that’s the sequential option. You can also use the Misdial Locator to find numbers that are 1 digit away from a specific number too. They won’t necessarily be sequential but they’ll still be very similar and can look familiar to people who’ve seen the other number or numbers. You can also use our State Search to find multiple 800 numbers for your term with different state initials.
