Why Vanity Number Brokers beat regular phone companies

If you were playing chess with blind people that really didn’t care about winning you’d probably be able to beat them most of the time, don’t you think? Well that’s the exact same advantage that vanity number brokers have (yes, I know they don’t like to be called that, but it’s pretty much what they are, even if they call themselves shared use or anything else).
Regular phone companies are basically blind about the vanity spelling of a number and they don’t really care about getting them unless one of their customers is asking for them. The vanity number brokers don’t have to wait for a customer to ask for them, they go out and try to grab up anything so of course they beat the phone companies that have to wait for an actual customer to request them before they care about them. The benefit to a regular phone company may be a happy customer, but that’s nothing compared to the value the broker personally gets from it.
The brokers have found that by being a resporg they can get the advantages of being a phone company and still have the advantages of being an end user at the same time and the FCC doesn’t seem to care. Well if and when they ever do release any new toll free area code it’ll be interesting to watch the vanity number brokers suck them up by the hundreds of thousands or even millions (literally!). I hope that someone with some sense at the FCC realizes that they have to change some things before that happens, because that’ll make it that much harder to fix if they don’t change the system significantly before they release another area code. And it’ll certainly show their true BROKER colors as well!

William,
I’m kind of like a real estate agent. I can help you find houses that are for sale. I can’t go try to get someone to sell you houses that aren’t for sale. I’m sorry that there’s no short cut, but it’s actually much harder to walk up and buy someone’s house that isn’t for sale for several reasons. Houses have a book value, and people are used to buying and selling them and know what it’ll cost you to move and to get another home. There’s also a way to look up and find out who owns a house even if they don’t answer the door.
None of those things are the same for toll free numbers. So it’s a real long shot to try to get a number that isn’t available, and I can’t make my business going after long shots for customers that don’t realize how impossible what they’re asking is.
