Eggheads think Toll Free will Die
Every time you hear this, just know that you’re listening to an egg head that is too smart for their own good. I understand that things change but doesn’t it seem a little dumb to say that some new technology which is already here to a large degree is going to kill an industry if the industry isn’t even affected at all today.
Eggheads who get a new cell phone that doesn’t have a traditional keypad assume the whole world is using the same phone and will obviously stop using vanity numbers. (never mind their new blackberry cell phone can still dial vanity numbers and they just don’t know how to do it)
Eggheads see voip and sip and think that because they can make phone calls for free that everyone will suddenly stop needing or using toll free numbers. (never mind that there are a lot more reasons to get a toll free number than just because it’s toll free)
They write an article predicting the demise of toll free numbers or vanity numbers conveniently forgetting to even check the usage and demand to see if there’s any evidence of their conclusion. They act like cell phones or free long distance are somehow a brand new phenomena. Cell phones without traditional keypads, don’t charge any “long distance” and have been around several years. So wouldn’t you think that the use of toll free numbers would have started to go down at least a little?
People who make stupid predictions based on a change in technology that’s been around for years and is widely used but hasn’t had any of the effect they’re predicting are Eggheads. That’s the nicest name I can think of without calling anyone an idiot or stupid. The funniest thing is when it’s a newspaper reporter predicting the demise of toll free numbers as he prepares his own resume.

Andy Abramson wrote a classic egg head prediction. There have been other people but his blog makes it hard to comment on so I figured I’d post something here.

One newspaper writer got angry with me personally when I pointed out that he was wrong so he started attacking me. I thought that was funny that someone working for a newspaper would predict another industry dying. That’s kind of like the Titanic telling other boats to be more careful.

The same people who theorize about toll free numbers could also apply this theory to conclude that .com domain names are dying, because there are now so many top level domain names now. Originally .com was the only commercial top level domain but even though it’s not the only one any more. But you know whtat? It still somehow turns out to be the best, despite what anyone’s theory is.

I had an interesting conversation with someone on Twitter a few minutes ago, that went along with this topic. Unfortunately I couldn’t find the original tweet but it was something to the effect that VOIP is killing 800 numbers. You can see the rest here in reverse chrono order.
