Waiting can cost more than you realize
People sometimes ask if they can wait and keep the number on our free temporary service for a while, until they’re ready to start their advertising. They usually ask this because they imagine that this might be helpful and save them some expense. In reality it saves them almost nothing since they mainly pay for the use on the number and before they advertise it they would have hardly any use. On the other hand trying to wait until the last minute could cost them quite a bit in several ways.
Procrastinating would mean more work when you are busier trying to launch everything, missing some potentially important calls and worst of all, it could wind up taking longer than expected and hold up your whole launch. Occasionally some numbers also get wrong numbers either from a previous customer or a similar neighboring number. It’s much better to find that out before you launch than after. So please just transfer the number over to your carrier and get it set up as soon as possible so you’ll have one less thing to worry about or go wrong later.
It’s not that you can’t wait, but the downside of waiting is much higher than people ever realize. They act like they will save a significant amount by waiting till the last minute. That’s true of your rent, but its just not true of your toll free number.
Sometimes people think they’re busy. They imagine that they will be less busy in the future because they’re not looking at their todo list for that future day. It seems far off and then it’s easy to forget about. Unfortunately forgetting about it is another risk too. But even if they don’t forget it, they are forgetting that the closer they get to launching their business, the busier they are going to be. And perhaps the biggest thing that they don’t usually realize in the beginning is that a toll free number is one of the best tools for faking it until you make it, in launching their business. (See: http://www.tollfreenumbers.com/blogs/guide/fake-it-till-you-make-it.html)
It’s human nature to want to put things off. We all do it. And we don’t have a specific deadline to remove your toll free number. Eventually after more than a year it can of course be considered abandoned and dropped or charged a carrying fee. But leaving it in limbo for even a couple months still has a cost that is usually much higher than getting it up and working so you have one less thing to realize. It makes sense to delay major expenses as long as possible, but your toll free number isn’t one of those things. At $1.99 per month on Opex (one of the most popular choices we give customers) there’s literally no reason not to get it set up so you can use it at the last minute or whenever you need it without worrying about it. Don’t you wish your rent only cost you based on how many people actually walked through your door?
