Changing Names
When you activate an 800 number with us we give you the option of putting the toll free number into any name you want. If you don’t specify a different name, in the Official Customer of Record field, we will use both the billing name and the company name in our records. This posts explains how you can change this if it’s necessary and just as importantly, when you really have to.
Not for regular transfers
You do NOT need to change the name simply because you’re transferring the number to a company that has something slightly different for your organization.
Most phone companies will tell you that everything has to match exactly in order to transfer a toll free number. That is true for other phone companies that are trying to hold onto their customers. But we aren’t trying to hold onto our customers.
We’re the only phone company trying to transfer their customers away, so transferring is an important part of our job. That’s why we have tried to speed up the transfer process and release them as fast as possible.
Not because you move
You do NOT need to change the information on your Toll Free Birth Certificate™ simply because you move or your organization changes. You don’t update your regular birth certificate when you move, because that isn’t your drivers license or registration.
Your Toll Free Birth Certificateâ„¢ is a one time thing that shows the origin, not the current status. If you change your organization or move and wish to keep the records straight, include a letter stating the changes and keep it with your Toll Free Birth Certificateâ„¢ just like you would keep the documentation for a name change with your own birth certificate.
Not because of a spelling error
You don’t need to change the information on your Toll Free Birth Certificate™ for spelling issues or slight mistakes. We may correct them however and send it back to you because it’s sometimes easier to do that than explain why you don’t need to. We want it to be perfect but we try not to get too hung up about it.
Because of a formal transfer
If you formally transfer your toll free number to someone else and it’s still on our resporg we will change the resporg records and your toll free manual for you if you email us the Toll Free Birth Certificate™ back and include the new name and address.
We do this as a courtesy for customers. It’s not wrong to transfer a number, but we do not encourage this and we don’t get number for anyone in the business of reselling numbers. That doesn’t mean you can’t transfer a number to someone else and even get compensated, but you can’t get numbers for the purpose of reselling them. Dear Elizabeth in Amityville, NY,
We do not change your birth certificate to put a 1 in front of the area code. If you want to write it that way you can, but it’s not wrong to write it without a 1 any more than it is wrong to put periods instead of dashes. You are welcome to write it however you want, but please don’t ask us to change your Toll Free Birth Certificateâ„¢ for something like that.
Changing email addresses is already addressed in the article just like if you moved and changed your physical address.
Our service is a one time charge, not an ongoing service. You also have to realize how many new customers we have to serve every day. We simply can’t effectively provide ongoing updates.
If you want to pay an additional $9.95 administrative fee we will make changes to your BC. Just write on it what changes you want and send it back with cash, check or money order and we will make the changes and email it back to the email address you provide.

By the way. You don’t need a separate Toll Free Birth Certificate™ for every number. Nobody usually has a separate bill for every number. They are always on the same bill so phone companies are used to that.
