Reselling your 800 numbers
I’ve gotten a few questions from past customers recently about reselling their ’800′ number, so I figured this is probably worth addressing specifically on the website. Here’s one of the questions I received.
I got an ’800′ number from you a couple years ago but I’m not going to need it any more. What could I make in selling it, if you handled the sale?
“800′ numbers have certainly gotten harder to get. We had to start charging $30 more for an ’800′ than an 8** regular number from the spare pool. So they do have some value, and if you’ve done a lot of advertising over the years or if it’s a great vanity number it could obviously have even more potential value than just a random number. However the value of a basically random ’800′ or a partial vanity number or even a mediocre vanity term probably isn’t worth the effort to market it, partially because there’s no central place or system to market them, like there is for domain names.
You could throw a listing up on ebay if it’s at least somewhat valuable in terms of a nice numeric number or mid level vanity term. But it’s only worth it because it’s so inepensive and easy to do once you know how to do it. You don’t see very many actual numbers moving from there.
There’s also no central place to market toll free numbers on the web the way there is for domain names because of the regulations against hoarding and brokering at the FCC. They basically say that you can’t get toll free numbers for the purpose of reselling them and can’t go into the business of buying and selling (or brokering) toll free numbers. We’re also adding comments to our search results (among other things) so you could put a comment about it there in case anyone looks for it on our website. But again that’s not the purpose of our site and we’re not charging for that or acting as a broker.
My advice would be if you have any potential to need or be able to use it in anything else in the future hold on to it. It’s only about $2 per month to hold it on an inexpensive 800 service. And a good toll free number is an asset that you can take with you for the life of your business or even from business to business. But when you decide it’s time to get rid of it, there’s nothing preventing you from getting paid, but just don’t figure that it’s automatically worth a whole lot and don’t waste a lot of time promoting or marketing it, unless it’s an amazingly good number.
If you really don’t need it, look for someone else in your business or industry that could use it and would benefit from any old callers. If it’s still on our resporg we can re-issue a new Toll Free Birth Certificate™ but we really can’t buy and resell numbers that way.
