How NOT to promote your business!
04/15/2008
We all hear how important link building is and want to promote our website, but you have to be very careful who you trust. Even a great service may outsource the work to the wrong people, which can be devastating to their business. If you use an outside service they have nothing at all to lose because they’re not the ones that are going to get penalized for their shady practices.
The next time you see someone offering to get you 100+ “quality” links for $39.95, remember this list. Here’s the Full Text List but I’ve included a small sample of their spam links below. The text below is actually linked to the full list of spam links. This is just a sample. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist though to realize that these pages are identical.
I actually found spammy identical pages like these for three successful websites just in my small toll free niche, get800today.com, RingCentral.com and TollFreeMax.com. RingCentral.com for example, is a successful service that’s been around since 1999, has over 2,000 pages indexed on Google, 620,000 links on Yahoo, and an Alexa score of 16,409. Those are great numbers but their PR rank is 6!
Google’s not stupid and there are certainly many other factors there, but if I can find glaring examples like these, you know Google certainly can too. So the point of this post, or the moral of this story if you prefer, is that fly by night web promotion companies have an incentive to use the quickest easiest shortcut. They aren’t going to be penalized or even be around when your rankings start to nose dive.
If you have a successful website you’ve built and slaved over for years, you have a lot to lose, if you make a mistake and get penalized. So not only can you not take stupid short cuts, you can’t let the people around you either, or you’re the one that will pay for it.
