Password on your toll free number?

800 number password

Sometimes when people set up a new toll free number they hear a confusing message asking them for a password when they first test their toll free number. It gets even more confusing when they call up and tell the phone company that their toll free number isn’t working. Because when the phone company calls it, they don’t aren’t calling from the ring to number, so it seems to work fine.

Dialing your own local phone number is usually how you reach your voicemail on most cell phones or regular phones. And when you dial your toll free number, if it forwards to the number you’re dialing from, the local phone company thinks you dialed your own local number and sends you to your voicemail. So the password isn’t on the toll free number, it’s just your voicemail password.

This pops up every once in a while so I just figured I’d write up a quick explanation here to hopefully avoid a little confusion or embarrassment.
