Google Voice is a boon to business, not a threat

Google Voice is great for vanity 800 numbersSomeone asked me today if our business was hurting because they got a local vanity number through Google Voice (which is currently only available by invitation). I just thought I’d include that brief question and my answer here. I also want to apologize because I’ve been slow in posting the past few days partially due to a vacation in New Orleans on top of the 800Watch rush, plus trying to get the new Provider section ready to launch too.

Google doing something with vanity numbers is actually only adding credibility and exposure to the idea of vanity numbers, not hurt it or reduce the need for vanity toll free numbers. We’re going to make a section about getting a toll free number that you can point to your Google voice number to essentially add the features of GV to the toll free number. Google voice does in a sense compete with the enhanced voicemail services but GV customers are great prospects for toll free numbers.

We also have a lot of new projects coming out. We just added a whole new provider section, more 800 number information in the toll free search results, we’re working on adding local vanity numbers to the search results, we started a new 800 number directory, we’re working on a Twitter Look up tool, and more. There are so many exciting new projects that it’s hard to keep them all straight.
