Looking for an 800 number like1-800 MOVING or 1-800 STORAGE
I just got off the phone with someone in the Moving and Storage business and I wanted to write out some of the things from that conversation because I think they would really be helpful for anyone in the Moving and Storage business.
800-***-MOVE may sound tempting because “that’s what everyone else does” but that’s also the reason you probably DON’T want to do it. You don’t own the word MOVE and can’t stop your competitors from taking a confusingly similar number. You won’t show up if they Google just part of that number. It says nothing about your business except what business you’re in. If they don’t know that’s what business you’re in from seeing the advertising, truck or wherever you’re going to use the number, you’ve got bigger problems than just your phone number.
I think the ultimate question is really why would you intentionally pick a number that is potentially confusingly similar to your competitors? Instead of looking for something that’s harder to get and ultimately makes you blend into the background, try highlighting your strength and what sets you apart from your competitors. Focus on the point of your advertising, which hopefully isn’t just telling them what business you’re in but why they should chose you.
You wouldn’t name your business just, “Movers” or “Storage.” You know that’s not a unique enough name to make your business. You probably don’t have Movers.com or Storage.com. So don’t limit yourself to such an obvious term for your toll free number either.
