Have a glass of Creativity
I have to tell people every day that they have to be more creative, because the first most obvious generic term they thought of and really really wanted, isn’t available. The solution is clearly to be more creative. Unfortunately that is often easier to say than for most people to do.
People often ask me HOW to be more creative, and there are a few creativity tools that can be helpful. You can use a thesaurus or try Google-ing some of the phrases in your advertising or in competitors advertising. Try looking through the yellow pages of competitors in other parts of the country.
There are two very powerful tools that can actually be very fun to use. They are friends that understand and are supportive of your business and beer. You simply combine these two things with a purpose and a pen and paper (most people find holding a pen brings out creativity more than a keyboard does). Start by having a contest with a few close friends to see who can come with the most crazy slogans for your business and who can come up with the craziest slogan too.
There’s something magic about relaxing and letting your guard down with friends having just having fun with it. Do NOT get critical of anything. That shuts down creativity very fast. But have fun reading idea out loud and each idea will wind up with multiple variations and spawning more ideas. You’ll find very quickly that if you do it right, the hard part will be stopping at a dozen (which is the minimum).
Don’t try to tone the crazy ideas down into usable ideas on the same night or time that you come up with them. You can check all of the domain names and phone numbers later. But when you do, you may find that the further away you go from the obvious generic terms the more likely they are to be available, plus the more brandable and memorable they are.
Have a couple beers with your friends, enjoy the creative process and make it work for you. It takes some work but it can be fun too.
