The Initial Research to track down an 800 Number

tracking down the owner of an 800 number When you’re trying to track down the owner of a toll free number the first thing you can try because it’s the easiest, is just to call the toll free number. If it goes through to someone, then you just need to find out who to talk to. If it doesn’t go through to anyone it’s a little harder to track down the customer.

The first thing to do if it doesn’t go through is of course to Google the number with quotations. I usually find that Google has information on about 25 to 30% of the toll free numbers. One of the things we’re working on is building a historical database of all of the Google results since that can often help to locate the company even after they’re gone and even after their website is gone too, if you have the old search results.

You can also check AT&T’s Anywho.com, or GoTollFree.com although they don’t a very high percent of numbers listed. And just because you can’t find any references to it doesn’t mean it’s in not in use, or that whoever has it will give it up. The next step if the number doesn’t go through and you can’t find anything via these searches is to go through the phone company responsible for the number. The phone company is often the only ones that have the customer information.
