Local Phone Companies say ridiculous things

local phone companies don't like forward 800 numbers to cell phones

If you want a toll free number that goes to your cell phone and ask your local phone company you may hear something pretty silly. Local phone companies sometimes tell you that you need to get a new separate local phone line and point the toll free calls there and then forward that new local number to your cell phone. This is just totally ridiculous and winds up costing you several times as much as would if you sent your toll free number straight to your cell phone.

Local phone companies are in business to sell local phone lines so that definitely helps them sell more local phone lines. But it also means you need a separate phone line, which is probably about $30 per month, and then you are not only paying about twice as much for the toll free calls going to the wrong number, you’re also paying for the forwarding of the calls from that local number to your cell phone. But wait, they’re now all instate calls so the forwarding is also much more expensive too.

In the end you’ll probably wind up paying at least 3 to 5 times or more, by going to your local phone company in that situation. There’s nothing that inherently prevents toll free numbers from going to a cell phone. The local phone company just invents their own rules about forwarding your toll free calls to your cell phone. This is one of the worst case scenarios but the local phone company is in business to sell you local phone service, not toll free service. That’s why we usually say that your local phone company is the most expensive, most restrictive and hardest to work with choice you can make.
