Why do toll free companies require credit checks if you’re providing a credit card for payment?

It may help to think of a toll free number as a “credit card.” It’s ultimately a license to charge phone calls instead of retail purchases, but other than that, it’s the same thing. If you can find a company offering credit cards at competitive rates to anyone over the internet without a credit check, I’ll pay your phone bill.
It seems obvious if you look at it from the company’s point of view.

You can always go to a non-competitive company like AT&T or someone charging two or more times as much per minute and per month if you don’t want a credit check. But you can’t expect a company to provide competitive low rates and not care about whether the customers they sign up are likely to pay their bills.

Another option is to use some of the enhanced voicemail services because some of them charge you upfront and just recharge your credit card when the account gets low. Those companies don’t care a whoot about who you are. That’s called pre-paid instead of post-paid, like most regular phone companies. We try hard to give you good options that are extremely competitive but we don’t handle the credit part so we aren’t the ones that get in hot water if people don’t pay their bills. So we are as limited by their company policies as you are. We are just trying to help you comply and get the service you want or need.

      Telcan is one of the enhanced voicemail services and they are also prepaid I believe. They have to be because they do so much internationally. They are a good service but they’re not really a regular phone company.
