Are we an 800 Number Squatter?
I got this question recently and figured if one person was asking it there were probably a couple more that might think it or wonder too. I came up with the term ‘Squatter’ because 800 number Broker brings up the FCC regulations against Hoarding and Brokering. It’s essentially defined as someone that goes out and grabs up good numbers and ‘squats’ on them hoping someone will come along and want them enough to pay a big premium for them.
We’re a Resporg and pull numbers directly from the National database.
I’m not an 800 number squatter for two reasons. First we get most of the numbers customers request directly from the available pool at the customer request. This is more like a domain name registrar than a domain name squatter. That’s the context that the term Squatter is usually used and where I originally took it from.
Our fees aren’t based on the value of the # or the need or pocketbook of the customer.
The second reason we’re not a Squatter is because we’re the only one in the vanity number business that doesn’t set the price based on the estimated value of the number. Our fees are only based the time and effort required to get the number and our activation fees are actually lower than some other people charge even though they make a commission on the usage too. Most vanity number companies vary the pricing quite a bit based on other things too like how deep the pockets of the prospect look as well. That’s because their goal is clearly to get as much as possible for each number.
Our prices simply don’t vary. We usually have a sale once a month but our prices are very clear and straight forward. We don’t charge more or even less because we like someone or think they can afford it. The Squatters don’t list their prices on a web page because they vary based on what they think they can get from a customer. We are totally open and transparent with very simple listed prices that don’t vary.
So we’re really not a squatter any more than AT&T or Verizon. We simply work harder to help you find good numbers and go the extra mile to come up with options than regular phone companies don’t and can’t. That’s not wrong or inappropriate and it’s good for the customer and the industry.
