The Three Question Rule

3 question ruleI try to help people as much as possible, but especially in the consulting area, some people ask for direction every step of the way, like I’m their boss in charge of getting them through this process. So while I really do want to help people I also have to try to help as many people as possible too.

So I have to occasionally impose the three question rule on people. This is sometimes necessary, especially in emails which sometimes evolve into an ongoing back and forth volley. I really do appreciate everyone’s interest but I get my exercise at the gym so I have to respectfully disengage sometimes.

This doesn’t mean that you can never ask another question again. It just means you either have to take a break. Try to find the answers on the website first, because honestly there are very few questions that aren’t answered there. If you politely contact me again after a couple weeks I’ll try to help you or if you really need more time you can pay for it. I don’t do this because I don’t want to help visitors to our website, but because I do want to help as many people as possible. I also have to be careful not to do things for people that they can do for themselves. This is especially true about doing queries with our look up tools, because that creates a dependency that slows them down and wastes everyone’s time. It’s kind of like picking up my 4 year old’s toys. It may be easier in this one case to pick them up instead of making him do it. But once I start he’ll expect me to always pick up his toys.

    Your site is an excellent Internet resource. I've never seen anything like it. I own about a dozen 800 numbers, but not until I discovered your site was I able to pick the numbers I really wanted and get a good idea of all the options really available to me. In the past,some disinterested person would offer me 4 or 5 numbers to choose from and tell me that's what was available.
