800 number syntax

Four-foot phone dial from 1931Technically we have to dial a 1 in front of any area code in North America. But we only put a 1 in front of 800 numbers because they are more of a brand name. You don’t need to and probably shouldn’t put it in front of 888s, 877s, or 866s. It’s understood just like it’s understood in front of local area codes.

You used to have to put “Toll Free” in front 800 numbers but you don’t need to, that’s one of the benefits of 800 numbers over 866’s of 877’s. You should probably include the term “toll free” in front of 866s and 877s. Seth Godin recently wrote Drop The Dot about how we’ve learned to use domain names and don’t have to write out http://www… any more. You just write WHATEVER.com on the side of your truck and everyone knows that it’s a domain name.

Cory Doctorow wrote an interesting post on boingboing http://www.boingboing.net/2008/04/09/fourfoot-phone-dial.html about how the phone company worked so hard to teach kids how to dial the phone. There’s a learning or education curve in every business.
